These cute people are Reta & Percy Flinders...my paternal Grandparents. They have been gone now for 10 years, and I find it interesting how often I think of them and remember little things they used to say and do. The older I get the more interested I am in really understanding and knowing about the people I came from!! Fortunately, I have many fond memories of these two good people and their great examples!

Today happens to be my Grandma's Birthday...(she would have been 98!) funny that I thought of her and realized that as I was making these:
Here is the story:
I am the youngest of 7 children. When I was about 5 years old my parents went on a trip to the Holy Land for 3 weeks. They left all 7 of us (ages 15-5) under the care of Grandpa & Grandma. Grandma raised 4 children nicely spaced between about 15 years. I think 3 weeks of the 7 us during the middle of summer break was at times, a little more than she bargained for! In the middle of the stay, during a hot afternoon...she gathered us all together and told us if we would sit outside and finish snipping all the beans, and shelling the peas from the garden she would go inside and make us...CANDY BARS!
Well, you can imagine our excitement and enthusiasm!! "How and when did she EVER learn to MAKE CANDY BARS??" we all discussed amongst our selves!! Not to mention our racing imaginations of how she would package them and what types they would be!! Our sheer delight and excitement of her anticipated creations certainly made the task at hand seem so simple! Well, one can imagine our thoughts and disappointment as we told Grandma we were done and ready for our CANDY BARS, when she appeared with a plate of these:
"WHAT??!!! That is just a graham cracker with frosting!" we explained to her!! "Oh nonsense," she said, "these taste just as good as a Candy Bar...at a fraction of the price."
Well...just as good? I'm not so sure. Fraction of the price...she was right on! She was a true believer of "Waste Not, Want Not". That is why every time I have some extra frosting in my bowl...my kids enjoy a plate of Homemade Candy Bars!!

That is such a SWEET story in so many ways. I love hearing about your beloved grandparents and my Mom used to make those too (and I do as well). However, I've never heard of them called Homemade Candy Bars. I love it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing the story Shelley! She certainly did get more than she bargained for with all 7 us little darlings! Great memories....
Homemade candy bars the greatest! Probably one of my favorite treats(:
There is a lot to learn from that! Memories of Grandparents are the best. It's so great to write them down, and have the pictures to boot. What a great, sweet memory. You gotta love grandmas!
I love everything about this post! I don't remember you ever making candy bars for me in college :) I am still waiting for the recipe for that peanut butter brownie amazing stuff you brought to my house!
